Little Hero, my 小英雄, is in leading Chinese newspaper Lian He Zao Bao today!
I shared with journalist Lin Mei Ling that this was not a story that I set out to write. During the pandemic, when we were all holed up at home, I interviewed my father methodically about his childhood and my grandparents’ stories back in the 1940s and 1950s. I self-published this collection of memories in a slim legacy book for my dad’s 77th birthday in 2021.
Over the next year or so, the stories stayed vividly in my memory, which led to me writing my first middle grade book manuscript. This work of fiction is inspired by my father’s childhood and grandparents’ exploits.
Little Hero is a fictional tale of separation, loss and growing up in post-war 1940s Singapore, seen through the eyes of a young boy Ying Xiong. As Xiong makes a friend, encounters a fearsome teenage gangster and a brave police inspector, he comes to understand what it means to be a hero, which is the literal meaning of his name Ying Xiong.
Published by Penguin Books SEA, Little Hero was released on 30 April as Amazon.sg’s #1 Hot New Release and is on its bestseller list for Children’s Historical Fiction.
